In an attempt to make the shutdown as painful as possible, the White House is going out of its way to block access to public memorials and national parks. They not only closed Mount Rushmore, but they actually placed cones along open, public roads to prevent visitors from pulling off to take pictures of the mountain. It's like that everywhere. Hundreds of miles away, this administration even sent troopers to try and close Mount Vernon – they found out the hard way that Mount Vernon is privately funded.
Make no mistake, their actions are blatantly political. They are spending more money to keep people out of open air parks and mountain roads than they would have spent during a normal day. Just like closing the White House to tours a few months ago, this is nothing more than a cheap political stunt.
